Copyright & licensing

Authors retain copyright. Accepted articles are licensed CC BY 4.0 unless otherwise stated. Third-party material needs its own permission.

Copyright and the CC BY 4.0 licence

Authors retain the copyright of articles published in JPBS. All articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) licence unless otherwise stated.

CC BY 4.0 permits anyone to copy, share, redistribute, reproduce, adapt and build upon the published work for commercial and non-commercial purposes, provided that appropriate credit is given to the original author(s), the journal and the original publication are properly cited, and any modifications are clearly indicated.

Authors retain copyright while granting JPBS the right of first publication and a non-exclusive right to publish, distribute, archive, index, reproduce and make the article publicly available in electronic and other appropriate formats. Supplementary materials associated with the article, including datasets, figures, videos and appendices, will be made available under the same licence provided the authors hold the relevant rights, unless otherwise indicated.

Rights of the publisher

Upon acceptance and publication, authors grant JPBS a non-exclusive right to publish and disseminate the article worldwide; make it freely available on the journal’s website and through appropriate scholarly repositories and indexing services; reproduce and distribute it in electronic or print form; include it in journal collections, archives, databases and other scholarly platforms; promote it through appropriate academic channels; and preserve the published version of record.

These rights are non-exclusive and do not prevent authors from sharing, distributing or otherwise reusing their work under CC BY 4.0.

Third-party material and permissions

Authors are responsible for ensuring that all material in the manuscript is original, appropriately licensed, in the public domain, or used with the required permission. Permission from the relevant copyright holder must be obtained before publication if the manuscript contains copyrighted material not covered by a licence that permits the proposed reuse. When third-party material is reproduced with permission or under a separate licence, the copyright statement, attribution and licensing information must be included.

  • Previously published figures, tables, photographs, illustrations or other graphical materials.
  • Substantial portions of text reproduced from copyrighted publications.
  • Material obtained from books, journals, conference proceedings, reports, websites or other protected sources.
  • Third-party datasets, images or other materials subject to copyright or contractual restrictions.
  • Material published under a licence that does not permit the intended reuse.

Material that may be reused without additional permission

Additional permission is generally not required when the material is entirely original; when it is published under a licence that permits the intended reuse, such as CC BY 4.0, provided the source is acknowledged and the licence terms are followed; when it is in the public domain; or when a figure, table or illustration has been independently recreated or redrawn from previously published information, with citation of the original source and without reproducing protected expressive elements. Proper citation of the original source is always necessary.

Authors unable to retain copyright

In certain circumstances, such as government or institutional copyright restrictions, authors may be unable to retain copyright under the standard JPBS policy. If that applies, authors should notify the Editorial Office before publication so that the appropriate copyright and licensing statement can be established.
